Better support for young victims of sexual violence: the impact of our training services across the socio-judicial sector in 2022–2023

Imagine, if you will, a child revealing that he or she has been the victim of sexual violence. The journey that lies before them, developing resilience and learning how to adapt to this new reality, is complex, challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach as well as the support of qualified and compassionate professionals.

How we support these children throughout this process is crucial. Their ability to adapt after overcoming the unimaginable relies heavily on how well they are supported by professionals in the socio-judicial sector.

Given this fact, Marie-Vincent has resolved to be a source of positive change, firmly committed to better address the training needs of professionals who support young victims.

Our training programs are designed for:

Employees working for a Crime Victims Assistance Centre (CAVAC), legal aid, the Crown and the Director of Youth Protection (DYP), investigators, lawyers for the sector’s community organizations, professionals providing medico-social interventions and psychotherapeutic services, as well as community organization staff members.

Our impact in 2022–2023: expanding our range of training courses for the socio-judicial sector

2022–2023 has been a critical year in the development and expansion of our training programs for the socio-judicial field. Thanks to the support of the Quebec Ministry of Justice and our collaboration with the École nationale de police du Québec (ENPQ), we increased our influence and intensified our impact across this sector.

Our courses provide professionals in the socio-judicial sector with the tools they need to:
  • Learn about the many different contexts and types of disclosure of sexual violence to better understand young victims as a whole as well as their victimization experience.
  • Recognize children’s cognitive abilities and suggestibility in order to adapt interventions to a child’s capacities and avoid unintentionally influencing their testimony.
  • Develop strategies to effectively support young people and their loved ones so as to reduce risks of secondary victimization, an often overlooked but vital issue of the healing process.
  • Address the resistance of young people in a non-suggestive manner during interviews, fostering a climate of trust and understanding.
  • Master non-suggestive interviewing techniques to ensure complete and detailed testimonies.
